So, I’ve discovered that there is more than one reason to wear a belt and it changes as you get older.

First, we wear belts because we need something to hold up our pants.

Next, we wear belts because fashion tells us that is what you’re supposed to do.  Coincidentally, the color of your belt needs to match the color of your shoes (or so I was told).

And at my current stage of life, we wear belts as a safety measure.  It’s protection from the embarrassment of finding your pants around your ankles before you realize that your button has popped off under the pressure from your (eh hem) generous waist line.

Sorry to you guys who wear suspenders.  At least when wearing a belt, a burst button will remain relatively concealed behind the buckle (which might explain why some buckles are so huge…the victim of a button bursting may not notice until the waist line begins to get really twisted, hence a big buckle will keep the travesty concealed for a greater period of time, allowing the unsuspecting rube and opportunity to come up with a plan to resolve the situation without causing any undue harm to women and young children).

Just a random thought.
